Life Processes in Plants

Track quiz

Twelve quick questions. Use the table if you get stuck.

Life Processes in Plants: what each lab tests
LessonThe rule
Makes its own foodA plant makes its own food from carbon dioxide, water and sunlight.
Four needsA leaf needs sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll to make food.
Leaf partsChlorophyll catches sunlight. Stomata let gases in and out.
Starch testIodine turns blue-black where there is starch.
RootsRoots take in water. Minerals dissolved in it come too.
Two tubesXylem carries water and minerals up. Phloem carries food to every part.
Food storesThe leaf makes the food. Phloem carries it to the store.
RespirationPhotosynthesis makes food. Respiration releases the energy in it.
GrowthA plant needs sunlight and water to grow well. Without water it wilts. In the dark it turns pale and weak.
Carbon dioxideCaustic soda takes in carbon dioxide from the air. A leaf with no carbon dioxide makes no starch. So the leaf needs carbon dioxide.
What comes outA leaf in sunlight gives out oxygen. It also makes glucose, a sugar for quick energy. Extra glucose is stored as starch.
Coloured leavesMany red and purple leaves have chlorophyll too. Other pigments hide the green. A leaf with chlorophyll can make food in light.

Which gas does a leaf take in to make food?

  • Oxygen
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Nitrogen

A green leaf sits in sunlight. It has no carbon dioxide. What does it make?

  • Starch
  • No food
  • Only oxygen

Which part of a leaf catches sunlight?

  • Chlorophyll
  • Stomata
  • Veins

Iodine is added to a leaf that made starch. What colour appears?

  • Red
  • Blue-black
  • Green

What do roots take in?

  • Solid grains of soil
  • Water with minerals dissolved in it
  • Ready-made food

Which tubes carry water up from the roots?

  • Phloem
  • Xylem
  • Stomata

You test a slice of potato with iodine. It turns blue-black. Which part of the plant made the food?

  • In the leaf
  • In the potato
  • In the soil

What does respiration do with glucose?

  • Makes more of it
  • Breaks it down and releases energy
  • Turns it into sunlight

A young plant in sun gets no water for two weeks. What does it do?

  • It grows taller
  • It wilts
  • It turns deep green

Box X holds caustic soda. Box Y holds plain water. Both plants stand in sunlight. Why does the plant in box X make no starch?

  • The soda blocks the sunlight
  • The soda gives it too much water
  • The soda takes in the carbon dioxide

A water plant sits in sunlight. Tiny bubbles rise from its leaves. Which gas is in them?

  • Oxygen
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Nitrogen

A plant has purple leaves. Can it make food?

  • No, only green leaves can
  • Yes, if it has chlorophyll too
  • Yes, but only in the dark
