Life Processes in Plants

Sunlight, water and growth

A gardener plants four young bean plants. Some get sun. Some get water. Which grow well?

Four young bean plants of one size stand in four pots.
Step 1 of 2
  1. Four young bean plants of one size stand in four pots.
  2. Two weeks later: sunny and watered is healthy. Sunny and dry wilts. Dark and watered is pale and weak. Dark and dry is pale and wilts. Wilts means droops.

The idea

In this test, only the sunny, watered plant grows well.

Compare sunny and watered with sunny and dry. Only water differs. Compare sunny and watered with dark and watered. Only light differs.

Changing one thing at a time makes a fair test.

The rule

A plant needs sunlight and water to grow well. Without water it wilts. In the dark it turns pale and weak. In the dark a plant cannot make food, so it is weak.

Now try it. Pick the plant that will grow best. Then slide the days.
