The big picture
A plant grows, makes food, moves the food and stores it. The plant respires all the time.
| Idea | Remember | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Makes its own food | Carbon dioxide, water and sunlight make glucose. | Photosynthesis |
| Four needs | Sunlight, carbon dioxide, water, chlorophyll. | Miss one: no food |
| Leaf parts | Chlorophyll catches sunlight. Stomata let gases pass. | Pale patch: little food |
| Starch test | Dark first. Then iodine. | Blue-black means starch |
| Roots | Water comes in. Minerals come dissolved in it. | Sand stays out |
| Two tubes | Xylem: water up. Phloem: food to every part. | Red ink in a stem |
| Food stores | The leaf makes food. Phloem carries it to the store. | Potato, carrot |
| Respiration | Glucose and oxygen give energy, carbon dioxide and water. | Every part respires |
| Growth | A plant needs sunlight and water to grow well. Without water it wilts. In the dark it turns pale and weak. | Four plants, two weeks |
| Carbon dioxide | Caustic soda takes in carbon dioxide from the air. A leaf with no carbon dioxide makes no starch. So the leaf needs carbon dioxide. | Two plants, two boxes |
| What comes out | A leaf in sunlight gives out oxygen. It also makes glucose, a sugar for quick energy. Extra glucose is stored as starch. | Bubbles from a water plant |
| Coloured leaves | Many red and purple leaves have chlorophyll too. Other pigments hide the green. A leaf with chlorophyll can make food in light. | A purple leaf |
