Life Processes in Plants

Where the food ends up

A cook slices a potato. A drop of iodine turns the slice blue-black. That shows starch, a stored food. Which part of the plant made that food?

The idea

Food is made in the leaf. The phloem carries the food to other parts. Extra food is stored as starch.

A plant stores food in different parts. A potato is a stem. A carrot is a root. A groundnut is a seed. An onion is made of layers of leaves.

One clue tells you the part.

A potato has eyes, the small spots on its skin. Each eye can grow a new shoot, a young stem. This shows a potato is a stem. A carrot has no eyes.
