Exploring Magnets

Making a magnet, and losing one

You stroke a steel needle with a magnet. Can the needle pick up a clip?

Loading lab…

The idea

Yes. The needle becomes a magnet, so it picks up a clip.

Stroke a steel needle with one end of a magnet. To stroke is to rub from one end to the other. Always stroke in the same direction.

A magnet gets weaker if you drop, hit or heat it.

A steel needle, and a magnet to stroke it.
Step 1 of 3
  1. A steel needle, and a magnet to stroke it.
  2. It picks up a paperclip. It is now a magnet.
  3. Drop it hard, and it weakens.
