The Amazing World of Solutes, Solvents, and Solutions

Uniform or not

Homemade ORS is salt and sugar in water. It tastes the same in every sip. Muddy water does not look the same everywhere.

Salt water is the same all through.
Step 1 of 2
  1. Salt water is the same all through.
  2. Sand in water is not. You can see the sand.

The rule

A uniform mixture is the same all through. Its parts cannot be seen apart. This is a solution. In a non-uniform mixture, the parts differ from place to place.

Sand does not dissolve. It stays as separate grains. Chalk powder looks even at first. After it stands, it settles at the bottom.
