The Amazing World of Solutes, Solvents, and Solutions

Warmth moves the limit

Baking soda stops dissolving in cold water. Warm the water and the rest dissolves.

For most solids, the limit rises with warmth.
Step 1 of 2
  1. For most solids, the limit rises with warmth.
  2. For gases, the limit usually falls with warmth.

The rule

For most solids, solubility rises as the water gets warmer. For gases it usually falls. So cold water holds more oxygen than warm water.

Fish and plants use the oxygen dissolved in water. Warm water holds less oxygen. So fish get less.

Pick a temperature. Choose a solid or a gas.
