The Amazing World of Solutes, Solvents, and Solutions

How strong is it

A millilitre (mL) measures a small amount of liquid. Glass A has 3 spoons of sugar in 150 mL. Glass B has 5 spoons in 100 mL. Which tastes sweeter?

Glass A: 3 spoons in 150 mL.
Step 1 of 2
  1. Glass A: 3 spoons in 150 mL.
  2. Glass B: 5 spoons in 100 mL. It is more concentrated.

Glass B tastes sweeter. It has more sugar in each 100 mL.

New words

  • Concentration — the amount of solute in a fixed amount of solution.
  • Dilute — little solute. Concentrated — much solute.

The rule

Relative means judged by comparing two glasses.

Concentration is the amount of solute in a fixed amount of solution. More solute in the same amount makes it more concentrated. Dilute and concentrated are relative words.

To compare, use the same amount of solution. 150 mL is 1.5 times 100 mL. So A is 3 ÷ 1.5 = 2 spoons per 100 mL. B is 5 spoons per 100 mL.

Pick a pair of glasses. Find the stronger one.
