Proportional Reasoning-2

Track quiz

Ten ideas, ten checks. The table comes first. You can read it while you answer.

Ten ideas about shares of a whole, and amounts that pull against each other
IdeaHow it goes
The whole turn360° divided by however many are in the set.
A sliceMultiply that figure by the group's count.
The checkAdd every exact angle. The total must be 360.
What it saysShares only. One known count and its slice give the total.
Two chartsThe same picture can come from very different totals.
InverseOne product on every row means inverse proportion.
Which kindDivide for direct, multiply for inverse, or neither.
At workMultiply, divide by the new amount, multiply back.
Many termsMultiply every term by the same number. Find that number from the amount you know.
Sharing a wholeAdd the terms. Divide the whole by that sum. Multiply each term by the answer.

Twenty-four shopkeepers answered a poll. What angle is one shopkeeper's slice?

  • 24°, because there are 24 of them
  • 15°
  • 360°, because the chart stands for everyone

In a class of 30, 12 take the bus. What angle does that slice need?

  • 12°, because 12 take the bus
  • 144°
  • 30°, because 30 were asked

Four slices measure 120°, 95°, 80° and 55°. Does the chart close?

  • Yes, four groups made four slices
  • No — the four angles add to 350
  • It cannot be checked without the counts

A crops chart gives rice a 90° slice, with no total written. What can you tell?

  • How many fields grow rice
  • What share of the fields grow rice
  • How many more fields grow rice than any other crop

Two clubs, 50 and 250 members, draw matching pie charts. What follows?

  • The two clubs are the same size
  • The two clubs split into the same shares
  • One of the two charts is wrong

3 pipes fill a tank in 8 hours. 4 pipes take 6 hours. 6 pipes take 4 hours. Inverse?

  • No, because the pipes do not rise by equal steps
  • Yes — 3×8, 4×6 and 6×4 all make 24
  • No — dividing gives 2.67, 1.5 and 0.67

A stall charges ₹20 to enter, plus ₹15 a ride. 2 rides cost ₹50, 4 cost ₹80. Which kind?

  • Direct, because more rides always cost more
  • Neither
  • Inverse, because it fails the direct test

5 machines pack a lorry in 12 hours. How long do 4 machines take?

  • 11 hours, because one fewer machine is one fewer hour
  • 15 hours, and 4 × 15 = 60 checks back
  • 9.6 hours, because 12 scaled down by 4/5 is 9.6

A mix is 2 : 5 : 3. There are 15 spoons of the middle ingredient. How many spoons of the third?

  • 18
  • 9
  • 45

₹2,000 is shared in the ratio 1 : 3 : 4. How much is the middle share?

  • ₹750
  • ₹667
  • ₹250

Your book has this as Chapter 3 of Part II, Proportional Reasoning-2. You found slice angles and checked that a chart closes. You also found the days a job takes.

Next: Exploring Some Geometric Themes. It has shapes with depth and self-repeating patterns.
