A Peek Beyond the Point

Decimals at the shop and on the scale

A scale shows 1.35 kg, kilograms. The shop slip says 1350 g, grams. Are they the same rice?

Loading lab…

Same rice, two units. Divide by 1000.

The rule

Yes. They are the same amount of rice. 1350 ÷ 1000 = 1.35.

Small unit to big unit? Divide. Divide by how many small units make one big one.

Big unit to small unit? Multiply by the same number. Here L means litres and mL means millilitres. 0.45 L × 1000 = 450 mL.

Four everyday swaps
Written smallHow many make one bigWritten big
275 paise100 paise in a rupee₹2.75
135 cm100 cm in a metre1.35 m
2500 g1000 g in a kilogram2.5 kg
450 mL1000 mL in a litre0.45 L

Money is written to the hundredths column. That is because 100 paise make a rupee. A shop writes ₹8.50, not ₹8.5.

Check the size. 450 mL is under a litre. So 0.45 L is sensible, and 45 L is not.
