A Peek Beyond the Point

An exact spot between two whole numbers

A line from 5 to 6 has ten equal gaps. Where is 5.3 on that line?

Loading lab…

2.4 sits four tenths past 2.

The rule

Count three gaps from 5. That is where 5.3 is.

A decimal with parts lies between two whole numbers. The lower one is its whole part. 5.3 is between 5 and 6.

Each gap is a tenth. Three tenths past 5 is 5.3.

Cut each gap into ten parts for hundredths. 1.06 is six hundredths past 1.

2.4 and 2.40 are the same point. No hundredths is the same as zero hundredths.

Watch out!

3.05 is not halfway between 3 and 4. Halfway is 3.50. Five hundredths is barely past 3.
