A Peek Beyond the Point

The splitting does not stop at tenths

A paper is a little more than 3.4 units long. What is the extra bit called?

Loading lab…

One whole, cut into ten tenths.
Step 1 of 4
  1. One whole, cut into ten tenths.
  2. Look closely at one tenth.
  3. That tenth cut into ten hundredths.
  4. Ten tenths fill one whole.

The rule

Cut a tenth into ten parts. Each part is a hundredth. Ten hundredths make one tenth.

A little more than 3.4 can mean 3.4 plus a few hundredths. For example, 3.4 and 6 hundredths is 3.46.

Cut a hundredth into ten parts. Each part is a thousandth.

The columns after the point
ColumnWrittenHow many make one whole
Tenths0.110
Hundredths0.01100
Thousandths0.0011000

0.25 is 2 tenths and 5 hundredths. It is also 25 hundredths. 2 tenths are 20 hundredths, and 20 + 5 = 25.

One kilogram is 1000 grams, or 1000 g. So one gram is a thousandth of a kilogram.
