A Peek Beyond the Point

Start here

A shop scale shows 1.35 kg. The needle stops between two marks.

A number between two whole numbers.

This track follows Part I, Chapter 3, A Peek Beyond the Point.

What you will learn

  • Tenths and hundredths — a whole cut into ten parts, then again.
  • Reading, placing and comparing — say it, place it, compare it.
  • Two names, adding, units — a decimal is also a fraction. Add with points lined up. Change units.
  • Whole plus part — a decimal is a whole and a fraction.
  • Borrowing — a top digit too small? Break one from the column on its left.
  • Look-alike dots — 2.4 hours is 2 h 24 min. An over's dot is not a decimal point.

Need a quick recap?

  • Place value (Track Zero) — a digit's spot says what it counts.
  • Comparing numbers (Track Zero) — more digits means more. That holds before the point.
  • Fractions (Fractions track) — the bottom number sizes one part. The top counts them.
  • Measuring (Perimeter and Area) — pick a unit that gives an easy number.
