A tally is one mark for each answer. So you do not recount the pile.

An empty tally.
Step 1 of 5
  1. An empty tally.
  2. One mark.
  3. Four marks, standing up.
  4. The fifth mark crosses the first four.
  5. Two more marks. 5 + 2 = 7.

A tally counts in bundles of five. A bundle is five marks together.

  • Four marks stand up. The fifth mark crosses them.
  • Count each bundle as 5. Then add the loose marks left over.
  • Two bundles and two marks: 5 + 5 + 2 = 12.
