Data & Patterns I

Data comes in kinds

A phone keeps a score, a photo, a video, a bell sound. Is each one data?

Loading lab…

Yes. Data comes in five kinds.

Five empty boxes.
Step 1 of 6
  1. Five empty boxes.
  2. Numbers box: 23.
  3. Words box: Mango.
  4. Pictures box: a small grid of dots.
  5. Video box: a screen with a play mark.
  6. Sounds box: a bell's ring, drawn as a wave.

Data can be numbers, words, pictures, video or sounds.

  • Numbers — a count, a score, an age.
  • Words — a name or an answer. Some books say text.
  • Pictures — a photo or a drawing.
  • Video — moving pictures, often with sound.
  • Sounds — a bell, a clap, a voice.

Watch out!

A phone photo looks like a picture, not numbers. It is a grid of tiny dots called pixels. Each pixel's colour is stored as a number.
