How Nature Works in Harmony

Chains join into a web

A frog eats grasshoppers, crickets and spiders. Is that one chain?

Loading lab…

Rice feeds grasshoppers. That is one chain.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Rice feeds grasshoppers. That is one chain.
  2. Grasshoppers feed frogs. Rice to frog is one path.
  3. Crickets also feed frogs. That is a second path.
  4. Spiders eat crickets. Frogs eat spiders. The paths cross.

The rule

No. The frog has three foods, so it is in three chains.

Many animals eat more than one kind of food. So food chains join up. They form a network of joined chains, called a food web.

A chain is one thread of the web.
