How Nature Works in Harmony

Living and non-living, in one place

A pond has fish, frogs, water and sunlight. All of them matter.

Loading lab…

A pond has living things: fish, frog, grass, mushroom.
Step 1 of 3
  1. A pond has living things: fish, frog, grass, mushroom.
  2. It has non-living things: water, soil, air, sunlight.
  3. They affect each other. Together they form an ecosystem.

The rule

A habitat is the place where a living thing, or organism, lives.

Microbes are tiny living things. The living parts of a habitat are biotic: plants, animals and microbes. The non-living parts are abiotic: air, water, soil, sunlight and temperature.

Biotic and abiotic parts affect each other. Together they form an ecosystem. Plants need sunlight and water. They also add oxygen to the air.
