The Ever-Evolving World of Science

Track quiz

Nine quick questions. Use the table if you get stuck.

The Ever-Evolving World of Science: what each lab tests
LessonThe rule
Ideas can changeKeep an idea while every record you trust fits it. A record you trust may not fit. Then drop the idea, or re-check the record.
What changes a mindLook at the evidence for each side. Hold the side the evidence backs best, for now.
Better toolsA finer grid gives smaller squares. Two things in one square look like one thing.
A model that worksA model works only where it fits. Check a new case before you trust it.
Checking each otherCompare the gap between two averages with the jump inside one group. A gap far below the jump gives no sign of a difference. Repeat the test to be sure.
Still goingA test tells two ideas apart only if they expect different things.
QuestionsOne answer can fit many questions. Asking a good question is part of science. A tested idea can still raise new questions.
CarePeople's choices change nature. Using less and wasting less helps the future. Science can show which choices help.

An idea says: slow tap only when the tank is low. A checked morning has a full tank and a slow tap. What now?

  • Keep it, because most mornings fit
  • Drop the idea, or check the record again
  • Keep it until half the mornings disagree

Two neighbours give opposite reasons for a leak. One has lived there thirty years. What decides it?

  • The neighbour with thirty years
  • The side the evidence backs best
  • The neighbour who sounds surer

A photo shows one blob. It may be two lamps. What could show it?

  • Printing the photo bigger
  • A finer grid with smaller squares
  • Looking at the photo for longer

The line says a stick is −6 cm long at 75 minutes. What went wrong?

  • The line is always right
  • The line was used where it does not fit
  • The stick grew back

A group's trials jump by 7. Two groups' averages are 2 apart. What do you say?

  • The groups clearly disagree
  • No sign of a real difference
  • One group counted wrong

Two ideas both expect a slow tap on Monday. The tap is slow. What does Monday tell you?

  • The first idea is right
  • Nothing about which idea is better
  • The second idea is right

Two ideas still fit every record. What is the next step?

  • Pick the one that sounds best
  • Plan a test where they expect different things
  • Stop asking

The answer is "Wait until it cools." Which question could lead to it?

  • Why do birds sing?
  • What is the Moon made of?
  • When can I drink the tea?

A worn-out LED lamp needs throwing away. What is the careful choice?

  • Recycle it
  • Put it in the garbage
  • Leave it in the field
