The Ever-Evolving World of Science

Using science with care

Most fireflies flash to find a mate. A mate is a partner for making baby fireflies. The number of fireflies is falling in some places. Why?

A firefly flashes to find a mate.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A firefly flashes to find a mate.
  2. A bright lamp makes the firefly flash less.
  3. Fewer fireflies find a mate.
  4. With the lamp off, it flashes as before.

One cause is too much light at night, called light pollution. Light pollution can harm living things at night. Cutting forests also removes their homes.

The new words

  • Light pollution — too much light at night, made by lamps.
  • Mate — a partner for making baby fireflies.
  • Recycle — make old things into new things.

The rule

People's choices change nature. Using less and wasting less helps the future. Science can show which choices help.

Using an LED lamp is one such choice. It uses less power than an old bulb. It also lasts longer. An LED lamp is dead when it no longer works. Do not put a dead LED lamp in the dustbin. Have it recycled.

Now try it. Read each choice. Tap what it does to nature.
