The idea

A substance in the basic group is a base. Soap, baking soda and lime water are all bases. A base feels soapy or slippery. Many bases taste bitter.

Lime water is not the lime fruit. Lime water is made from chuna, or calcium oxide, in water.

Four basic things on a shelf.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Four basic things on a shelf.
  2. Baking soda, washing soda, lime water, soap.
  3. Only one of the four is a soap.
  4. All four are basic. Only one is soap.

A base turns red litmus blue. A bitter taste alone does not make a base.
