Digital Safety & Citizenship II

Checking, not looking

A message says school is shut tomorrow. You want to settle it. To settle it is to find out the truth. Reading it four times does not help.

A message arrives.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A message arrives.
  2. Looking harder: may not settle it.
  3. A check reaches an outside source.
  4. Settled.

Looking harder may not settle it. A check brings in something the message does not have. An outside source is a person or place apart from the message.

A changed picture can look like a real one. Three checks to try:

  1. Does somewhere else say it, on its own?
  2. Did someone else who was there say the same?
  3. Ask a grown-up you trust. Do it every time you are unsure.

A copy of the message is not another source.

To forward is to send a message on to others. Check before you forward a message. Forwarding it spreads it, true or not.

If you cannot tell, do not forward it. Ask a grown-up you trust.

Tap the moves you would try. Which settle the message?
