What counts as data

You ask 5 friends how they get to school. Three say bus. Does the whole class come by bus?

Loading lab…

The rule

No. Five friends can differ from the whole class.

Data is a fact you collect. You ask, count or measure. Nobody invents the numbers.

To know the whole class, ask the whole class.

Ask 5 friends.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Ask 5 friends.
  2. 3 of the 5 say bus.
  3. Ask the whole class: 30 students.
  4. Only 9 of 30 say bus. That is a much smaller share.

Example

Ask 5 friends. 3 say bus, so bus is the most common answer.

Ask the class of 30. 13 say walk. That is more than 9 for bus.
