Data Handling and Presentation

Picking the right picture

Three jobs need three kinds of chart. First, votes counted live as hands go up. Second, the book counts of five friends. Third, rain in four months. A chart is a way to show data.

The rule

Three different jobs.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Three different jobs.
  2. Counting live: tally marks.
  3. A few small counts already collected: pictograph.
  4. Bigger numbers: bar graph.

Counting live, one at a time? Tally marks are fastest. Each answer needs only one quick stroke.

A few small counts, already collected? A pictograph is quick to make. A few counts need only a few pictures.

Bigger numbers? A bar graph is easier to read. At one picture for each count, a pictograph needs too many.

Example

Rain in millimetres: 40, 70, 55 and 25. The numbers are big. Use a bar graph.

Pets: 2, 3, 1, 4 and 2. The numbers are small. Use a pictograph.
