Life Processes

Track quiz

Here are the rules first. Each lab uses these exact words.

Life Processes — the chapter fact each lab checks
IdeaThe rule
Four processes, one bodyLife processes keep a body in repair. Nutrition brings in food. Respiration releases the food’s energy. Transport carries things around. Excretion removes harmful wastes.
Makers and eatersAn autotroph makes its own food from simple things. Carbon dioxide and water are two of them. Green plants use sunlight to do it. A heterotroph depends on food made by other living things.
A meal taken apart in stepsFood is broken down step by step along the alimentary canal. Enzymes do the breaking down. Digested food is absorbed in the small intestine.
Respiration is chemistryRespiration breaks glucose down to release energy. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen and releases much more energy. Anaerobic respiration works without oxygen.
Why big bodies need a pumpBlood goes through the heart twice in one round of the body. This is double circulation. The right side sends blood to the lungs. The left side sends it to the body.
Moving water in plantsBy day, transpiration pulls water up the xylem. At night, root pressure matters more. The phloem carries food both up and down.
Filtering the bloodA nephron filters blood. It takes back glucose, amino acids, salts and much of the water. What is left leaves as urine.
Where urine goesUrine is made in the kidneys. Urine flows down the ureters to the bladder. The bladder stores urine. Urine leaves the body through the urethra.
What plants do with wastePlants let gases out and lose extra water as vapour. A falling leaf carries some waste away. Old wood stores waste as gums and resins. Some waste goes out into the soil.
How a leaf makes foodPhotosynthesis needs carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and chlorophyll. It makes glucose and oxygen. Extra glucose is stored as starch.
Test a leaf for starchIodine turns blue-black where there is starch. A leaf needs chlorophyll, light and carbon dioxide to make starch.
The path of airAir passes through the nostrils, throat and windpipe. Then it passes down smaller and smaller tubes to the alveoli.
Where gases swapAlveoli are tiny balloon-like sacs with thin walls. Blood vessels wrap round them. Oxygen passes into the blood. Carbon dioxide passes out.
What blood carriesPlasma is the liquid part of blood. It carries food, wastes and much of the carbon dioxide. Red cells carry oxygen with haemoglobin. Platelets help blood clot at a cut.
White cells and lymphWhite cells fight germs. Fat that you digest travels in lymph. Lymph also returns spare liquid to the blood.
Three kinds of tubeBlood leaves the heart in arteries, under high pressure. Artery walls are thick and elastic to stand it. Veins bring blood back. Many veins have valves that keep it moving one way. Capillaries are the tiniest tubes. Food, oxygen and wastes cross their one-cell wall.
How much urine? Both kidneys together filter about 180 L of liquid in a day. Just 1 to 2 L leaves as urine. The rest is taken back. The amount taken back depends on the body’s water. It also depends on the wastes to remove.

Which life process brings food into the body?

  • Respiration
  • Nutrition
  • Excretion

A mushroom breaks food down outside its body. What is it?

  • An autotroph
  • A parasite on a plant
  • A heterotroph

Where does protein digestion start?

  • In the stomach
  • In the mouth
  • In the large intestine

What does yeast make from glucose without oxygen?

  • Lactic acid and water
  • Lactic acid and carbon dioxide
  • Ethanol and carbon dioxide

Blood has just returned from the body. Where does it go first?

  • To the heart’s right side
  • To the lungs
  • To the left side of the heart

What mainly moves water up the xylem by day?

  • Transpiration pull
  • Root pressure alone
  • Food moving in the phloem

A nephron filters the blood. Which useful substance is taken back?

  • Urea
  • Uric acid
  • Glucose

Urine has just left a kidney. Which tube carries it to the bladder?

  • A ureter
  • The urethra
  • A capillary

A tree has no kidneys. How can it store some waste?

  • In a bladder, as an animal does
  • As gums and resins in old wood
  • In its blood, as an animal does

Which pair does a leaf make in photosynthesis?

  • Carbon dioxide and water
  • Glucose and oxygen
  • Starch and carbon dioxide

A strip of black paper covers part of a leaf. After the iodine test, that strip stays brown. What does this show?

  • Chlorophyll is not needed
  • Carbon dioxide is not needed
  • Light is needed

Air has just passed the windpipe. Where does it go next?

  • Down smaller and smaller tubes
  • Straight into the alveoli
  • Back into the throat

One big air sac is cut into many small ones. The air space stays the same. What changes?

  • The sacs hold more air
  • The blood flows faster
  • The sacs give more surface

Which part of blood carries oxygen?

  • Plasma
  • Red cells
  • Platelets

A cut lets germs into the body. Which blood cells fight them?

  • Red cells
  • Platelets
  • White cells

Which tube has a wall one cell thick?

  • A capillary
  • An artery
  • A vein

A person has had plenty to drink. What do the kidneys do?

  • Take back more water, so less urine forms
  • Take back less water, so more urine forms
  • Stop filtering the blood

Open Chapter 5 of your Class 10 Science book. It is Life Processes. Read it with these seventeen rules in mind.

The next chapter is Control and Coordination.
