Life Processes

Makers and eaters

A creeper called amarbel is yellow, not green. It still has food. Where does it come from?

Two kinds of living things.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Two kinds of living things.
  2. A maker takes in air, water and light.
  3. It builds its own food.
  4. An eater takes in ready-made food.

Tap each living thing. Read how it gets food.

The rule

Amarbel gets its food from another plant.

An autotroph makes its own food from simple things. Carbon dioxide and water are two of them. Green plants and some bacteria are autotrophs. The process is photosynthesis.

A heterotroph cannot make food. It depends on other living things. Animals and fungi are heterotrophs.

An autotroph makes its own food from simple things. Carbon dioxide and water are two of them. Green plants use sunlight to do it. A heterotroph depends on food made by other living things.

Heterotrophs feed in different ways. A mushroom breaks food down outside its body. A cow breaks it down inside. An amoeba wraps food in a food vacuole and digests it there. A food vacuole is a small bag inside the cell. Amarbel is a parasite. A parasite lives on another living thing and takes its food.
