Life Processes

Four processes, one body

Even when you sleep, your body is at work. It keeps repairing itself.

One connected chain, four boxes.
Step 1 of 5
  1. One connected chain, four boxes.
  2. Nutrition: food comes in.
  3. Respiration: energy is released.
  4. Transport: food and oxygen are carried around.
  5. Excretion: waste leaves the body.

The rule

The jobs that keep a body working are life processes. Living things need outside energy to repair themselves. They need raw materials to grow.

Life processes keep a body in repair. Nutrition brings in food. Respiration releases the food’s energy. Transport carries things around. Excretion removes harmful wastes.

The four life processes
ProcessWhat it does
NutritionBrings food into the body
RespirationReleases energy from food
TransportCarries food, oxygen and wastes
ExcretionRemoves harmful wastes

In a tiny one-celled living thing, the whole surface touches the surroundings. In a large body, most cells do not. Diffusion is the slow spreading of a substance. It moves from where there is more to where there is less. Diffusion is too slow to supply those inner cells. So large bodies need transport.
