Life Processes

Where urine goes

Urine forms in the kidneys. You pass it out much later. What happens in between?

The kidneys make urine.
Step 1 of 4
  1. The kidneys make urine.
  2. A ureter carries urine from each kidney.
  3. The bladder stores urine.
  4. The urethra lets urine out of the body.

Blood reaches the kidneys. Tap the stops in order.

The rule

Urine is made in the kidneys. Urine flows down the ureters to the bladder. The bladder stores urine. Urine leaves the body through the urethra.

The excretory system is the set of parts that remove wastes. It has two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder and a urethra. A ureter is a tube from a kidney to the bladder. The bladder is a bag that stores urine. The bladder wall is muscle. It stretches as urine collects. The urethra is the tube that lets urine out.

Follow one drop of urine. A nephron makes the drop. The drop leaves the kidney in a ureter. It waits in the bladder. Then it leaves through the urethra.

Kidneys can stop working. Then urea collects in the blood. A machine can filter the blood when kidneys fail. Using a machine this way is called dialysis.
