Track Zero: Getting Ready for Maths

× and ÷: groups and sharing

13 laddus. 4 friends. Can everyone get the same?

Loading lab…

The rule

Only 12 laddus can be shared equally. Each friend gets 3.

× counts equal groups fast. 4 × 3 means 4 groups of 3. It is 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12.

÷ shares the whole amount in equal groups. 12 ÷ 4 = 3, so each of 4 groups gets 3.

Check a share by multiplying the answer by the number of groups. 4 × 3 = 12.

Example

13 ÷ 4 = 3, with 1 left over. The leftover is the remainder. Each friend gets 3, which uses 12 laddus. 13 − 12 = 1.

Check: 4 × 3 = 12, and 12 + 1 = 13.
