Exploring the Investigative World of Science

Supports, goes against, or says nothing

The claim: "Hot oil puffs a puri faster." Three records arrive, each one a written result. What does each one do?

Claim: hot oil puffs a puri faster.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Claim: hot oil puffs a puri faster.
  2. Monday: hot oil 8 s, cool oil 15 s. It supports the claim.
  3. Tuesday: the oil smoked. It says nothing about oil heat.
  4. Friday: hot oil 14 s, cool oil 9 s. It goes against the claim.

Monday supports it, Tuesday says nothing, Friday goes against it.

Records can support a claim. They cannot prove it for certain. The next test could still go against it.

To contradict is to say the opposite.

The rule

A record that fits a claim supports it. A record that contradicts it goes against it. One clear record against a claim weakens it. A record that does not touch the claim says nothing.

Sort six records. Drag each to the lane for what it does to the claim.
