Exploring the Investigative World of Science

Write it down as you go

A week of puri tests is timed. Each day gets one row on the sheet. On Friday, Wednesday's row is empty. What can you say?

Ruled before the first test: Day, Seconds, Notes.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Ruled before the first test: Day, Seconds, Notes.
  2. Monday: 12 seconds, nothing to note.
  3. Tuesday: 16 seconds, and the oil smoked.
  4. Wednesday was counted, but never written down.

You can use only what is on the sheet. Wednesday's row is empty, so Wednesday adds nothing.

Write what you see, hear and smell. Did anything change while it fried? Write at once, because details are easy to forget.

The rule

Write down what you see as you work, not afterwards. A conclusion may use only what is on the sheet. What you did not write down cannot be claimed later.

Switch Wednesday off. Watch the average, the total shared equally among days, change.
