Large Numbers Around Us

Rounding to a place you choose

A shop sign says ₹4,999. Is that nearer to 4,000 or to 5,000?

Line from 47,000 to 48,000. Mark 47,382.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Line from 47,000 to 48,000. Mark 47,382.
  2. Halfway point: 47,500.
  3. 47,382 is left of halfway.
  4. Rounds down to 47,000.

₹4,999 is nearer to 5,000. It is only 1 below 5,000.

The rule

Rounding changes a number to a nearby easy one. Choose the place you are rounding to. Look at the part below it. Half that place or more goes up. Less than half goes down.

Take 47,382 to the nearest thousand. The part below is 382. Half of 1,000 is 500. 382 is less than 500, so round down to 47,000.

Now round 47,382 to the nearest ten thousand. The part below is 7,382. Half of 10,000 is 5,000. 7,382 is more, so round up to 50,000.

Watch out!

"Round 4,999 to the nearest thousand. You get 4,000 — just cross out the last three digits." That is wrong. Crossing out never gives a higher number. But 4,999 is only 1 below 5,000. The nearer thousand is 5,000.
