Large Numbers Around Us

Which large number is bigger

A rice mill prints two totals: 45,76,890 and 45,67,890. Both start 4, 5. Both end 8, 9, 0. Where do they first differ?

Two numbers, 7 digits each.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Two numbers, 7 digits each.
  2. First two digits match: 4, 5.
  3. Third digit: 7 against 6.
  4. 7 is bigger, so 45,76,890 wins.

They first differ at the third digit: 7 against 6.

The rule

Count the digits in each number. The number with more digits is bigger. If the counts match, compare the digits from left to right. Stop at the first digit that differs. The number with the bigger digit there is bigger.

One case is easy to get wrong. Compare 99,99,999 with 1,00,00,000. The 9s look big, but count the digits first: seven against eight. The eight-digit number is bigger before any digit is compared.
