Large Numbers Around Us

Past the thousands column

250 bricks in one row, 40 rows high. That is 250 × 40 = 10,000 bricks. That is 10 times one thousand!

Start at one thousand.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Start at one thousand.
  2. ×10 more — ten thousand.
  3. ×10 more — one lakh.
  4. ×100 more — one crore.

The rule

A column is a place in a number, like tens. Ten of one column make one of the next column. Ten lots of 10,000 make one lakh. Ten lots of 10 lakh make one crore.

Each column is ten of the one before it
ColumnWrittenMade from
Thousands1,00010 × 100
Ten thousands10,00010 × 1,000
Lakhs1,00,00010 × 10,000
Ten lakhs10,00,00010 × 1,00,000
Crores1,00,00,00010 × 10,00,000

Two shortcuts help. One lakh is a hundred thousand. 100 × 1,000 = 1,00,000. One crore is a hundred lakh. 100 × 1,00,000 = 1,00,00,000.

Slide the presses in the lab. Find the press count that makes one lakh.
