Working with Fractions

Adding pieces that do not match

A chocolate bar has 6 equal pieces. Half the bar goes to Asha. A third goes to Ravi. How much is that together?

A strip cut into sixths.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A strip cut into sixths.
  2. 1/2 renamed is 3/6.
  3. 1/3 renamed is 2/6, right after it.
  4. Together: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

Rename first, then add

Together they got 5/6 of the bar.

Rename both fractions onto one shared bottom number. Add the top numbers. Keep that bottom number.

Steps of 2 and steps of 3 both reach 6. So 1/2 is 3/6, and 1/3 is 2/6. Then 3 + 2 = 5. The answer is 5/6.

Try 3/8 + 1/6. Steps of 8 and steps of 6 both reach 24. So 3/8 is 9/24, and 1/6 is 4/24. Then 9 + 4 = 13. The total is 13/24.

Watch out!

Adding the bottoms too gives "1/2 + 1/3 is 2/5". But 2/5 is smaller than 1/2 and bigger than 1/3. Two amounts above zero never total less than either one.

Tap each answer in the lab. A wrong answer is drawn too short or too long.
