Working with Fractions

More than one whole

Cut strips into quarters. Put 12 pieces in a row. Shade 9 of them. That is two whole strips and one quarter more.

12 quarter-pieces in a row.
Step 1 of 4
  1. 12 quarter-pieces in a row.
  2. Shade 9 of them: 9/4.
  3. Ring 2 whole strips, then the 1 left over.
  4. 9/4 and 2 1/4 name the same amount.

Two names, one amount

9/4 has a top number bigger than its bottom. That makes it an improper fraction. Improper means a whole or more.

2 1/4 is a whole number next to a fraction. That is a mixed number. Read it as two and one quarter.

Swap between the two names
FromToHow
2 1/49/42 × 4 = 8, then 8 + 1 = 9
9/42 1/4Share 9 into fours: 2 left over 1

Slide the shaded parts in the lab. Both names show the same count.
