Working with Fractions

Share a fraction equally

You have 3/4 of a bar of jaggery. Six children share that piece equally. What does each child get?

A bar in 4 columns. 3 are shaded: 3/4.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A bar in 4 columns. 3 are shaded: 3/4.
  2. Cut the whole bar into 6 rows. That makes 24 cells.
  3. One row of the shaded part is one share: 3 cells.
  4. 3/4 ÷ 6 = 3/24 = 1/8 of the bar.

Share a fraction

Each child gets 1/8 of the bar.

Cutting the bar into 6 rows makes 6 times as many cells. Each cell is one sixth of the old size.

Multiply the bottom number by the number of shares. The top stays.

Check by adding the six shares. 6 × 3 = 18, so six shares of 3/24 make 18/24. That is 3/4.

Try 5/6 shared among 10. The bottom is 6 × 10 = 60. One share is 5/60 = 1/12.

Sharing among 6 is the same as multiplying by 1/6. And 3/4 × 1/6 = 3/24.

Slide the number of shares in the lab. Match the size of one share.
