What a dataset holds
To teach a program, you first need a pile of examples.
Step 1 of 4
- A table of four days. Each row is one day.
- One row is a record, also called a data point.
- One column is an attribute, also called a feature or a field.
- Many records make a dataset.
A dataset is a pile of examples. A model is a program that learns patterns from data. A model learns from a dataset. A separate part tests it. An attribute is one kind of fact about each record, like rain.
A dataset is a set of records. Each record is described by attributes. One way to name a dataset is by what it holds.
| Kind | Holds | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Words | A pile of messages |
| Multimedia | Pictures, video or sound | Clips of birdsong |
| Numerical | Numbers | Heights of a class |
| Time-series | Readings over time | Lake level each morning |
| Spatial | Places | Map positions of water taps |
Watch out!
Time-series and spatial data often hold numbers too. The time or the place decides the kind.
Read each description. Name the kind of dataset.
