Three Kinds of Guess, and Their Data

Making groups when nobody gave labels

A box of mixed buttons is poured on a desk. Nobody has labelled any button, so none has a name.

Eight buttons, mixed up. No labels.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Eight buttons, mixed up. No labels.
  2. Compare size. Two groups: 5 big and 3 small.
  3. Compare holes. Two new groups: 4 and 4.
  4. Compare both. Four groups.

Clustering finds groups of alike things. The program is given no labels. This is a kind of unsupervised learning. That means learning without labels.

The program makes the groups. A person can name them afterwards.

With some methods, you choose how many groups to make.

Clustering finds groups in things with no labels. What it compares decides the groups.

Pick what to compare. Make the groups each task asks for.
