Step 1 of 4
  1. A table of four days. Each row is one day.
  2. One row is a record, also called a data point.
  3. One column is an attribute, also called a feature or a field.
  4. Many records make a dataset.

A dataset is a pile of examples. A model is a program that learns patterns from data. A model learns from a dataset. A separate part tests it. An attribute is one kind of fact about each record, like rain.

A dataset is a set of records. Each record is described by attributes. One way to name a dataset is by what it holds.

Five kinds of dataset, by what they hold
KindHoldsExample
TextWordsA pile of messages
MultimediaPictures, video or soundClips of birdsong
NumericalNumbersHeights of a class
Time-seriesReadings over timeLake level each morning
SpatialPlacesMap positions of water taps

Watch out!

Time-series and spatial data often hold numbers too. The time or the place decides the kind.

Read each description. Name the kind of dataset.
