The Other Side of Zero

Moving, from wherever you are

A chalk-line game. You stand on a mark. A card says "add" or "take away".

Loading lab…

Start on −3.
Step 1 of 4
  1. Start on −3.
  2. Add 5. Walk right.
  3. Stop at 2.
  4. Add moves right.

The rule

Adding walks you right. Taking away walks you left.

Adding a positive number makes a number greater. Greater numbers are further right. Taking away makes a number less. A number that is less is further left.

This is still true when you cross zero.

Example

Start on −3. Add 5. Walk 5 steps right: −2, −1, 0, 1, 2. You stop at 2.

Start on 2. Take away 6. Walk 6 steps left: 1, 0, −1, −2, −3, −4. You stop at −4.
