Step 1 of 4
- A line from 0 to 6.
- The chalk runs out at 0.
- Keep going. Mark −1, −2, −3.
- Every step stays the same size.
The rule
The line does not stop at zero. Keep the same step size. New marks get a dash (−) in front: −1, −2, −3.
Example
Start at 0. Walk 3 steps left. You stand on −3.
Walk 3 steps right. You stand on 3. −3 and 3 are both 3 steps from zero.
