Control and Coordination

Other plant hormones

A banana sapling grows tall, grows new leaves, and then slows down. Plant hormones steer each change.

Gibberellins make the stem grow longer.
Step 1 of 3
  1. Gibberellins make the stem grow longer.
  2. Cytokinins make cells divide.
  3. Abscisic acid slows growth.

Pick a hormone. Watch the stem and the cells.

Auxin is not the only plant hormone. Plants make other hormones too. Each hormone has its own job.

Gibberellins help stems grow longer. A stem with more gibberellins grows taller.

Cytokinins help cells divide. One cell becomes two cells. So the plant makes more new cells.

Abscisic acid slows growth. A plant with more abscisic acid grows less.

The rule

Plants make other hormones too. Gibberellins help stems grow longer. Cytokinins help cells divide. Abscisic acid slows growth.

For example, a plant with more gibberellins grows a longer stem. A plant with more abscisic acid grows less.
