Control and Coordination

The centre and the cable

A skull protects the brain like a helmet. The fluid inside the skull softens knocks too.

The forebrain thinks and reads the senses.
Step 1 of 5
  1. The forebrain thinks and reads the senses.
  2. The midbrain helps with actions you don't choose.
  3. The hindbrain sits at the back and below.
  4. Its cerebellum keeps balance and posture.
  5. Its medulla runs blood pressure, salivation (saliva flow) and vomiting.

Read each job. Tap the brain part that does it.

The brain and spinal cord form the central nervous system. They gather messages from every part of the body.

The brain has three regions. The forebrain is the main thinking part. It reads signals from the senses and decides how to respond. A hunger centre there gives the feeling of being full.

The midbrain and hindbrain help with actions you do not choose. The medulla is in the hindbrain. It runs blood pressure, salivation and vomiting.

The cerebellum is also in the hindbrain. It keeps posture and balance. Posture is how the body sits or stands. The cerebellum also makes voluntary actions precise. These are actions you choose.

The backbone protects the spinal cord.

The rule

The brain and spinal cord are the body's centre. The brain has three parts: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. The cerebellum keeps balance. The medulla runs blood pressure, salivation and vomiting.

For example, a person standing on one foot does not fall. The cerebellum keeps the body balanced.
