One bar in parts

A farm grew three crops in two seasons, counted in quintals. A quintal is 100 kilograms. Season 2 doubled every crop. Six separate bars would be hard to read.

Step 1 of 2
  1. Season 1: paddy 40, ragi 25, pulses 35. Total 100.
  2. Season 2 doubles every crop: paddy 80, ragi 50, pulses 70. Total 200.

The rule

A stacked bar draws one bar for a whole season. It cuts the bar into segments, one for each crop. A segment is one part of the bar.

The full height of the bar is the total.

In season 1, the paddy segment goes from 0 to 40. The ragi segment goes from 40 to 65. The pulses segment goes from 65 to 100.

Which crop gave the most in season 1? Paddy, the longest segment.

Which season gave more? Season 2. Its bar is twice as tall: 200 against 100.

Gridlines are the lines across a chart that mark its values. One shared scale makes the doubling easy to see.

Watch out!

Ragi's segment ends at 65. Ragi is not 65. Its length is 65 − 40 = 25.
