The Invisible Living World: Beyond Our Naked Eye

Microbes are everywhere

A drop of pond water looks clear. Under a microscope, it is full of tiny living things.

Your gut is the long tube that digests food. A hot spring is water that comes hot from the ground. Amoeba and Paramecium are protozoa, one-celled microbes. Algae are simple plant-like living things, often green. Some are microbes.

Pond water. Amoeba, Paramecium and algae live here.
Step 1 of 5
  1. Pond water. Amoeba, Paramecium and algae live here.
  2. Soil. Fungi, bacteria and algae live here.
  3. Old fruit. A fuzzy growth on it is made of microbes.
  4. Your gut. Many bacteria live here, and they help digestion.
  5. Even hot springs and snow have some microbes.

The rule

A habitat is where a living thing finds what it needs.

Microbes live in water, soil, air, food and inside living things. Some live in hot springs and in snow.
