The Invisible Living World: Beyond Our Naked Eye

Start here

A spoonful of curd looks smooth. Look through a lens, and it is a crowd of microbes. Microbes are living things too small to see one by one.

Curd looks smooth. Zoomed in, it is a crowd of living things.

This is Chapter 2, The Invisible Living World: Beyond Our Naked Eye.

What you will learn

  • A lens makes a tiny thing big enough to see.
  • Kinds of microbe: bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses.
  • Where they live, and the jobs they do for us.
  • Food often spoils when microbes grow in it. Some microbes also do harm.
  • Salt, sugar, drying and cold keep them from growing.

Need a quick recap?

  • Grouping (in Diversity in the Living World) — one feature, one sort.
  • Habitats (same track) — where a living thing finds what it needs.
  • A plant makes its own food (in Life Processes in Plants).

Stay safe

Nothing here is grown for real. Never taste or smell old, mouldy food.
