Every column is a power of ten

A bill says ₹4,073. What does each digit count?

Loading lab…

4,073 — four digits.
Step 1 of 4
  1. 4,073 — four digits.
  2. Columns: 10³ 10² 10¹ 10⁰.
  3. Digits: 4 0 7 3.
  4. 4000 + 0 + 70 + 3 = 4073.

The rule

The 4 counts thousands. The 0 counts hundreds. The 7 counts tens. The 3 counts ones.

Every place-value column is a power of ten. Number the columns from the right, starting at 0. The ones column is column 0, so it is 10⁰.

4,073 = 4×10³ + 0×10² + 7×10¹ + 3×10⁰. The 0 means no hundreds. Without it, the 4 would be in the hundreds column.
