Power Play

Start here

32 kabaddi teams play. In each round, half of the teams lose and leave. How many rounds until one team is left?

Five rounds of halving take 32 teams to 1.

This track follows Part I, Chapter 2, Power Play.

What you will learn

  • A short way to write it — the top number counts the copies.
  • Two multiplied — the counts add.
  • Two divided — the counts subtract.
  • One power on another — the counts multiply.
  • The ladder to zero — why a count of zero gives 1.
  • Powers of ten — every place-value column.
  • Very big numbers — a small part times a power of ten.
  • Which is larger — when base and count both differ.
  • Counts below zero — each step down divides by the base.
  • Very small numbers — a small part times a negative power of ten.

Every lesson has a lab. Set the numbers and watch the count change.

Need a quick recap?

  • Place value — each column is ten times the one on its right.
  • Multiplying — 2 × 2 × 2 is 8.
