Sea breeze and land breeze

By day on a beach, the wind comes from the sea. At night the wind changes direction.

The idea

Land heats up faster than the sea. The land also cools faster. A breeze is a gentle wind.

A coast. Land on one side, sea on the other.
Step 1 of 5
  1. A coast. Land on one side, sea on the other.
  2. By day the land is warmer than the sea. Warm air rises over the land.
  3. Cool air moves in from the sea. This is a sea breeze.
  4. At night the sea is warmer than the land. Warm air rises over the sea.
  5. Cool air moves out from the land. This is a land breeze.

Warm air rises. So cooler air flows in sideways to replace the rising air.

By day, cool air moves from sea to land: a sea breeze. At night it moves from land to sea: a land breeze.
