Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical

Some of these will not go back

A clay pot falls and breaks into pieces. Every piece is still clay.

Loading lab…

The idea

A whole clay pot.
Step 1 of 4
  1. A whole clay pot.
  2. It falls and breaks into pieces.
  3. The pieces are glued together.
  4. The joins stay. It is not the same pot.

The rule

No new substance is made. Some of these changes still cannot be undone.

Undone means the same thing comes back, close enough to use again.

Grinding means crushing into powder.

Eight changes. New substance? Can we undo it?
The changeNew substance? Can we undo it?
Fold a sheet into a boatNoYes — unfold it
An ice cube meltsNoYes — freeze it
Sugar stirred into waterNoYes — dry it off
A page is crumpledNoYes — smooth it
A clay pot breaksNoNo
Vegetables are choppedNoNo
Chalk is ground to powderNoNo
A page is tornNoNo

Every row says "No" for new substance. So "physical means we can undo it" is wrong. These are two separate questions.
